The name of Mumbai Central Railway Station is likely to be changed soon, as confirmed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during the ongoing session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. A proposal to rename the station after Jagannath Nana Shankarsheth has been sent to the Central Government and is currently awaiting final approval.
Speaking in the Assembly, CM Fadnavis said, “The state government has completed the process and submitted the proposal to the Centre. The renaming will honour the contribution of Nana Shankarsheth to Mumbai’s development, especially in the field of railways.”
The demand for renaming was raised by Shiv Sena (Thackeray faction) MLA Bhaskar Jadhav, who also highlighted the absence of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Responding to this, Fadnavis assured that a grand equestrian statue of Shivaji Maharaj will be erected as part of the ongoing redevelopment of CSMT.
He added that Mumbai Central, being one of the busiest stations with lakhs of commuters daily, plays a crucial role in the city’s economy. Once the Central Government gives its nod, the official renaming is expected to take place soon.
