Nagpur is set to celebrate India’s rich craft heritage with its first permanent handloom and handicraft market, to be developed under the Urban Haat scheme. The Maharashtra State Handloom Corporation will build the project on 2 acres near Nirmal Nagari, Umred Road, creating a vibrant space for artisans and weavers from across the country.
Titled ‘Nagpur Urban Haat’, the project will feature 80 modern stalls, offering artisans a dedicated year-round platform to display and sell handloom textiles and handmade crafts. The market will provide essential amenities to sellers, bringing authenticity, artistry, and regional identity to a single urban destination.
The initiative falls under the Integrated and Sustainable Textile Policy 2023–28, with 80% funding from the Centre and 20% from the State. While the state has already greenlit the proposal, the process for central approval is underway.
“This will offer long-overdue recognition and opportunity to traditional artisans,” said G.G. Gajibhaye, Joint Managing Director of the Handloom Corporation.
More than a marketplace, the Urban Haat is envisioned as a cultural landmark—countering fast fashion by connecting artisans directly with buyers. The platform is also expected to boost product development, improve design quality, and strengthen India’s local craft economy.
With Nagpur growing as a cultural and commercial centre, the Urban Haat could become its next big attraction—where heritage meets high street.
