Fresh earthquake tremors rattled parts of Maharashtra’s Marathwada region shortly after midnight on Wednesday, triggering panic in Hingoli, Parbhani and Nanded districts as residents rushed out of their homes fearing stronger shocks.
Three to four tremors were felt within a brief period, with the impact being most pronounced in Hingoli city and nearby areas such as Vasmat, Kalamnuri and Aundha Nagnath. The latest seismic activity comes less than a week after a similar spell of earthquakes struck the region.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the strongest tremor, measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 1.37 am. The epicentre was located at a depth of around 10 km near Pangra Shinde village in Vasmat taluka. Several residents reported hearing a loud rumbling noise moments before the quake struck.
A second tremor of 3.6 magnitude was recorded at 2.15 am, followed by another measuring 3.9 magnitude at 2.17 am. Both were traced to an epicentre near Kakaddhaba village. A mild aftershock was also recorded at 3.23 am.
The repeated tremors led to anxious scenes across several villages, with residents gathering in open areas as a precaution. Temple loudspeakers were used in some places to alert people and advise them to stay away from buildings. Families, including children and elderly residents, spent a large part of the night outdoors.
On July 2, Hingoli district had witnessed two earthquakes within an interval of 10 hours, and the recurrence of tremors has heightened concerns among residents.
While experts attribute the increased seismic activity to seasonal geological movements and changes in underground pressure during the monsoon, officials said no casualties or major damage had been reported. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
