Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil has directed all police station heads and Crime Branch unit chiefs to identify personnel with corruption allegations and disciplinary issues, including alcohol and substance abuse, as part of an internal accountability drive.
The initiative forms part of the Commissioner’s “carrot and stick” policy aimed at curbing indiscipline while recognising exemplary service within the force.
Officials have been asked to prepare and submit lists of personnel facing repeated complaints related to alcohol dependency, substance abuse, habitual absenteeism, misconduct, poor performance and involvement in social vices. The lists will be reviewed by the Police Commissioner, following which the identified personnel will be monitored and given an opportunity to improve their conduct.
According to police officials, the exercise is intended to remove negative elements that impact the image, efficiency and public perception of the Nagpur Police.
Commissioner Nangre Patil has reportedly made it clear that officers making genuine efforts to reform will receive support, while habitual offenders and repeat defaulters will face disciplinary proceedings.
The accountability drive runs parallel to efforts aimed at rewarding dedication and outstanding service within the department. Recently, a head constable attached to Ambazari Police Station was awarded Rs 10,000 for rushing an injured murder victim to hospital despite being on leave, an act senior officers described as an example of commitment beyond duty hours.
Police officials said the twin approach of strict enforcement and timely recognition is expected to strengthen discipline, improve professionalism and boost morale across the force.
Senior officers believe the initiative will help identify problem areas at an early stage, improve operational efficiency and enhance public confidence in the city’s policing system. The exercise is being closely monitored by the Commissioner to ensure fairness and effectiveness in its implementation.
