To spread the awareness on saving the important and endangered species of big cats, Rotary Club of Nagpur Vision (RCNV) held a workshop on “Tiger Conservation and Wildlife Protection†on September 20, at Mimosa hall of Chitnavis Cultural and Art Centre, Civil Lines.
The workshop was addressed by Dr. Jerryl Banait, a well-known wildlife Conservator and a Guinness and Limca World record holder. Being a part of many wildlife protection programs, he has hands-on experience with a few wild animals and has a great knowledge of how things work and things should be maintained in the jungle.
During the workshop, Banait started with a video of a Bollywood celebrity and an actress, well known for her character as, Rupali Ganguly who is popularly known for her character as Monisha Sarabhai an Indian Sitcom, Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai. In this video, Ganguly is seen supporting the lecture series, by Banait known as “Voice for the Voicelessâ€.
Banait told the audience how hard it would be to live without Tigers as they are the Stripped Gods of the jungle. These are the animals that protect the rivers and maintain an ecological balance. Even though tigers are known to be ferocious hunters, they are even known to protect other animals at times.
He further discussed, how illegal “Tendu Patta†(Diospyros Melanoxylon) farming is done in the jungle and that has had huge ill effects on the territorial animals. The farmers keep the cattle inside the forest area but these animals do not belong there. As a result, wild carnivorous animals find these species as easy prey.
Such incidents have happened several times but the smuggling is still done on a large scale. Sometimes due to heavy pressure from the big shots of the underworld, the tiger is declared as a man-eater and is ordered to kill in an attempt to run their illegal business.
Banait even mentioned that why a tiger turns into a man-eater while discussing the wildlife conservation. “During the natural consequences when a tiger falls sick or is not able to hunt due to some internal injuries or because the feline cannot run after its prey, they turn towards an easier target, which is a natural instinct for any of the living being. There are few other scenarios such as the teeth of a tiger are starting to break or have gotten lost, that is the time when a tiger turns into a man-eaterâ€, said Banait.
How precious is our Mother Earth and in what way we are destroying the resources provided by our already beautiful world, was also a topic of discussion in the workshop.
During the workshop, Banait showed some heart-wrenching slides in which clearly showed how badly our earth is getting affected because of our ignorance and irresponsible behavior.
