Indian Medical Association (IMA), Divisional Commissioner Office and Zonal Transplant Co-ordination Committee (ZTCC), has organized an Organ Donation Week from August 11 to August 17.
Addressing to media about the Organ donation week, Prajakta Lanwangare Verma said that spreading awareness about organ donation was the need of the hour. “Majority of the brain dead cases are unreported. If awareness increased one brain dead person can give new life to 8 peoples,†She said.
Dr Sanjay Deotale, President of IMA informed that India, in spite of having second largest population in the world records negligible percentage of live and deceased organ and tissue donation. As per WHO statistics India records only 0.25 per cent organ and Tissue donation as against 4 per cent of global statistics. This disparity is mainly because of lack of awareness in general population regarding this noble cause.
“To spread awareness every year August 13 is celebrated as National Organ donation day.†He said.
He also added that various programs will be organized during the week, which includes panel discussion and public awareness programs. On August 15, on the auspicious occasion of Independence Day Organ Transplant Coordinators of various transplant hospitals will be felicitated. Dr Vibhavari Dani, Convener of ZTCC added that city has around 150 Kidney transplant and around 40 liver transplants.
Majority of the transplant are successful. “Our transplant success ratio is equal with the global ratio,†She said.
The conveners of this program are Dr Sameer Jahagirdas and Dr Sushama Thakre. Various social organizations like Lions, Rotary, Jaycees, Janakrosh, New Era Hospital etc will be helping IMA for this noble cause, She said.
