“32 years old female patient came to the hospital 15 days after giving birth with complaints of left lower limb swelling and pain since 3-4 days.
Patient did not have any other co-morbidity or major surgical illness previously.
Lower limb Doppler study was done which was suggestive of DVT (Deep Venous Thrombosis) and risk of Pulmonary Thromboembolism.
DVT is a condition where a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins, usually in the legs, which can cause pain, swelling, and potentially travel to the lungs, leading to a serious condition called a pulmonary embolism (PE)
Immediately decision was taken for IVC filter placement and with the help of Interventional Radiologist Dr. Shishir Rawekar, mechanical thrombosis aspiration and local thrombolysis performed for DVT. Post procedure necessary treatment protocol was followed. Patient stabilized and discharged on necessary medications Regular follow up as the filter will need to be removed after complete resolution of DVT. The safe and effective use of anticoagulant and use of of IVE filters and catheter directed therapies plays vital role to decrease mortality.
Pregnancy and the period of six to eight weeks after giving birth is a well estabilised risk factor for venous thromboembolism like DVT & PE. DVT is more common and more complex to diadgnos in pregnancy. Delayed diagnosis and inadequate treatment can result in death. Preganancy is state where there is increased tendancy for blood to clot and thus an increased risk factors contributing to thrombosis.
Managing Director Dr. Usha Nair mentioned how important it is to create awareness so that patients come on time to the hospital on time critical. DVT is considered a serious medical condition that can become a medical emergency.
