Marathi Bhasha Diwas (Marathi Language Day), commemorated annually on February 27, is a special occasion dedicated to honoring the deep cultural legacy and diverse linguistic richness of the Marathi language.
Marathi Language Day carries profound importance for the global Marathi-speaking community, paying tribute to the renowned poet Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar (Kusumagraj). Marathi is one of the most spoken languages in India. It has a total of 42 dialects, out of which some of the most common ones are Vaidarbhi, Zadi Boli, Konkani and Khandeshi. The language’s syntax and grammar come from Prakrit and Pali.
Taking to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde paid tributes to Kusumagraj, and extended his wishes on the occasion of Marathi Bhasha Gaurav Diwas.
HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE
The day coincides with Kusumagraj’s birth anniversary. Following his passing in 1999, the Maharashtra government established this day in his honour, recognizing his immense contribution to Marathi literature. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and promoting the Marathi language, fostering cultural pride and identity among its speakers.
