Nagpur: A tragic incident unfolded near Khapri Raja village in Umred tehsil on Sunday afternoon, where five individuals—including four from a Nagpur-based family—drowned in a deep water-filled pit at an abandoned stone quarry. The victims include two women, a young man, and two children.
Kuhi police have registered a case of accidental death and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The deceased have been identified as Ranjana alias Raju Suryakant Raut (22) of Gujarwadi, Nagpur; Roshni Chandrakant Chaudhary (32), along with her children Mohit (10) and Lakshmi (8), all residents of Laxminagar in Dhule; and Ehtesham Mukhtar Ansari (20) from Mominpura, Nagpur.
According to police, Suryakant Raut, a tea stall worker in Gujarwadi, had invited his daughter Roshni and her children to Nagpur for a housewarming ceremony. On the afternoon of May 11, Roshni, her children, younger sister Ranjana, and a family acquaintance Ehtesham stepped out, informing relatives they were going for a walk.
When they did not return by evening, Suryakant Raut filed a missing person’s complaint at Ganeshpeth police station. Ehtesham’s family also reported his disappearance. Despite overnight searches by the families, no leads were found.
The next day, on May 12 around 2 pm, all five bodies were found floating in a water-filled pit near the stone quarry in Kuhi. Preliminary investigation suggests the group may have entered the water to swim, but tragically drowned—some possibly while trying to save others.
Kuhi police are continuing their inquiry into the incident, while the city mourns the loss of an entire family unit in what appears to be a heartbreaking accident.
