Nagpur’s rising basketball star Siya Deodhar, aged 22, has earned a place in the senior Indian women’s basketball team for the upcoming FIBA Women’s Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in Shenzhen, China from July 13 to 20.
Hailing from Shivaji Nagar Gymkhana (SNG), Siya is the only athlete from Nagpur to have represented India in the 3×3 basketball category at the 19th Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China. Her latest selection underscores her position as one of the most promising talents in Indian basketball.
Siya began her basketball journey at the age of six under the guidance of Shiv Chhatrapati Award-winning coach Shatrughna Gokhale and coach Vinay Chikate at SNG. A resident of Dharampeth, she is the daughter of Shreesh and Swati Deodhar.
Over the years, Siya has represented Maharashtra in several national-level championships and was selected for the senior Indian women’s camp at just 16, a feat that speaks volumes about her early potential.
Her international journey kicked off in 2019, when she became the fourth Indian-born female to play high school basketball in the United States, following in the footsteps of Asmat Kaur Taunque, Harsimran Kaur, and Ann Mary Zachariah.
Siya also holds the unique distinction of being the only Indian female player to participate in all three NBA Academy India Women’s camps (May 2018, January 2019, and October 2019), where she received accolades at each edition.
Her consistent performance on both domestic and international platforms continues to bring pride to Nagpur, her alma mater SNG, and the Indian basketball community, while inspiring countless young athletes across the country.
