In a proud moment for Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA), Pawan Halwane from Akola has secured the top position in the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) umpiring examination conducted in June. Halwane scored an impressive 147.5 out of 150 marks, leading the list of 26 successful candidates announced by BCCI on Thursday.
Joining him on the successful list is another VCA representative, Vikrant Deshpande, a Railway employee, who also cleared the exam with a score of 130. Both will now be inducted into the BCCI Umpire Panel, as per an official statement released by the board.
Adding to VCA’s celebrations, two women from Vidarbha have excelled in the BCCI Match Referee examination. Soniya Rojoriya stood second across the country with a score of 83.5 out of 100, while Nama Khobragade followed closely, securing the third position with 81.5 marks. The top scorer in the exam was Shiva Kant Shukla of RSPB, who edged out Rojoriya by just one mark.
Soniya recently served as head coach of a women’s team during the inaugural edition of the Vidarbha Premier T20 League (VPTL), which concluded earlier this week.
This marks the second time a candidate from Vidarbha has topped the prestigious umpiring exam—Nitin Pandit being the first, who achieved the feat back in 2008.
