After 13 years of promises and patchy delivery, Nagpur’s 24×7 water supply dream is under the scanner. The Nagpur Environmental Services Limited (NESL) — a special arm of the NMC — has sanctioned ₹2.59 crore to hire an expert consultant to tighten the screws on the city’s private water operator, Orange City Water Pvt. Ltd.
The move comes after years of missed deadlines, rising public anger, and glaring failures in underserved zones like Hudkeshwar and Narsala, where residents still struggle with intermittent supply.
The consultant’s mission is blunt:
Slash Non-Revenue Water (NRW) from a staggering 40% to below 25% by March 2027 — stopping leakages, theft, and billing lapses that waste nearly half the city’s water.
Enforce pressure standards to ensure water reaches at least 8 meters high at endpoints — a target still unmet in many areas.
Audit every performance claim of OCW, issue penalties for lapses, and demand monthly and quarterly compliance reports.
Acting as Project Management Consultant, the agency will verify infrastructure quality, monitor contractors, and oversee works during the defect liability period. Smart tools like GIS mapping, SCADA systems, and real-time dashboards will be deployed for round-the-clock tracking.
With elections looming, NESL is making a political and public statement: the days of blind trust and unchecked operations are over. From now on, Nagpur’s water will flow only through a pipeline of audits, accountability, and relentless vigilance.
