Ashneer Grover and his wife, Madhuri Jain, have found themselves at the centre of a social media storm after comments made during a reality show triggered a heated debate on population, wealth inequality and family planning.
The controversy began after Madhuri, while sharing a personal anecdote on the reality show Lock Up 2, spoke about plans to expand her family and made remarks linking family size to economic status.
“We are planning a third child,” she said, before adding that if wealthy families have more children, wealth increases, whereas if poor families have more children, poverty increases. The remarks quickly sparked debate across social media platforms, drawing criticism as well as support from users.
Among the critics was social media influencer Nalini Ungar, who questioned the logic behind the statement and tagged Grover in a post on X. Ungar argued that if poverty was linked to poor families having more children, wealthy individuals should consider redistributing part of their wealth to help economically weaker families raise their children. Responding to the criticism, Grover defended his wife and dismissed calls for wealth redistribution, writing that such demands for donations were being made rather casually.
The exchange escalated further after Ungar responded by citing examples of prominent personalities, including Rajinikanth, Boman Irani, Oprah Winfrey, Charlie Chaplin and Kalpana Saroj, all of whom came from modest backgrounds before achieving success.
She argued that economic status should not determine an individual’s right to start a family and that opportunities, mindset and skills ultimately play a greater role in shaping outcomes.
The online debate soon drew participation from several users, with opinions sharply divided. While some supported Grover’s position, arguing that family planning should take financial capability into account, others criticised the remarks as insensitive and overly simplistic.
Several users also accused participants in the debate of using the controversy to generate engagement on social media. As discussions continue to trend online, the episode has reignited wider conversations around wealth distribution, economic mobility and the relationship between income levels and family planning in India.
