Tiger kills man, taking toll to 15 in Gadchiroli

The menacing sub-adult tiger killed another person near plantation site at Deloda-khurd in Gadchiroli tehsil last evening. This is the fifth prey of the big cat in last one month and 15th in the last about one-and-half years.

Sensation is prevailing among the people from 18 villages in the tehsil in view of continuous attacks by the problem tiger. The villagers are leading life with a sense of insecurity and agitated over ‘inactivity’ of forest department.

When contacted, Dr Kishor Mankar, Chief Conservator of Forest, Gadchiroli, told The Live Nagpur today that the tiger attacked and killed one Nimdeo Nagapure, resident of Deloda-Khurd,  near plantation site. The body was found today and it has been sent for post-mortem. The carnivore has consumed half of the body and left.

He said that one mother tigress was moving in the area along with three cubs. This sub-adult tiger got separated from its mother. There are as many as 15 tigers in Wadsa-Gadchiroli Forest Division, he pointed out.

It may be mentioned that villagers made demonstrations in front of the forest office yesterday by beating drums under the leadership of Dr Deorao Holi. They were demanding immediate capturing of this tiger to provide relief to the people. Dr Holi has demanded killing of the big cat immediately.

Dr Mankar assured them of the efforts being done by the department to trap the tiger.

He told that the department has installed cages and camera traps at strategic points for the purpose. Moreover, a team of forestmen from Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve has undertaken coming operation, following orders by Sunil Limaye, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Nagpur.
