A 64-year-old male patient was brought to the Emergency & Trauma Care Department at Alexis Hospital by relatives and neighbours with history of severe chest pain and profuse sweating along with loss of consciousness at home . On examination by Dr. Rupesh Bokade, Emergency & Critical Care physician, his ECG was suggestive of a massive heart attack. On further examination it was observed that the patient had very low blood pressure, heart rate was continuously dropping from 30/min to as low as 7/min and he also had severe breathing difficulty. To counter this, we immediately started percutaneous cardiac pacing (to increase heart rate), intubated the patient and put him on a ventilator within minutes of his arrival in our emergency department.
After carrying out the life saving measures in the Emergency department, the patient was immediately shifted to Cath Lab where Dr. Shoeb Nadeem, Interventional Cardiologist at Alexis , performed coronary angiography followed by temporary pacemaker implantation and primary angioplasty (stent placement to remove block in the blood vessel of heart)… Immediate relief with normalization of heart rate and gradual improvement in his blood pressure was noted. He was successfully weaned off ventilator on the next day itself and discharged after two days of continuous monitoring, treatment & observation.
Dr Rupesh Bokade, Emergency & Critical Care Physician shares, “In cases of cardiac emergencies, it’s a race against time. You cannot shift an extremely unstable patient to cath lab, hence, in cases of life saving emergencies, stabilizing the patient in the emergency department is a very crucial step for good outcomes & better long term prognosis.”
Dr Shoeb Nadeem, Interventional Cardiologist says that, “In case of major heart attacks, immediate opening of the occluded coronary artery is of paramount importance. Even a single minute delay in seeking medical advice and treatment may be life threatening. Concerted efforts and skills of our dedicated ER team was the Alexis advantage in saving this life.”
Dr Tushar Gawad, Director Administration shares, “Alexis Emergency Care is a protocol driven emergency system which ensures results every single time. The Emergency & Trauma Centre is reputed to respond the fastest in times of accidents, heart attacks, paralytic strokes and other life-threatening emergencies, thus providing optimum chances of survival and recovery to the affected.”
Mrs. Adey (w/o patient) while sharing about her journey at Alexis, shared, “as I got my husband to the emergency room at Alexis, he was unconscious and I was mentally in a frozen state; not in a condition to take any decision. The vibes and assurance that I got from this place and the team of doctors, my heart was rest assured of everything further. The proactive actions and the confidence that I got from everyone helped me cope up such a scary situation and handle myself and my family members. Just because of Alexis, I have my husband with me doing absolutely well today. This is the new place of birth for me and my husband!!!”
