A leopard cub of hardly 2/3 days found dead in a nullah in the open area outside Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoo Project on Monday.
Shatanik Bhagwat, Divisional Manager, Gorewada project, said, since the compound wall of the zoo is intact there is no chance of any wild animal either going outside or coming in. There is movement of some leopards outside the park and this cub must be belonging to a female leopard moving and making habitat outside. It rained last night and it washed away towards the nullah, it is suspected.
The carcass was found in compartment no: 791, Reserve Forest West Gorewada outside the park in the nullah. After conducting ‘panchnaama’, the body was brought to Gorewada Rescue Centre. Dr Sujit Kolangat and Dr Mayur Pawse conducted the post-mortem and confirmed death due to drowning.
Bhagat, Vijay Survayanshi, Asstt. Conservator of Forest, Nilay Bhoge, Range Forest Officers, Ajinkya Bhatkar, Kundan hate, Representatives of NTCA and PCCF (Wildlife) respectively, and other were present when the carcass was burnt.
