In a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the Maharashtra Cabinet decided to establish 5 more family courts and sanction 45 posts in light of the pressure on the family court in Nagpur.
In Nagpur, there are currently 4 family courts. Due to the increase in family disputes, the Maharashtra government was considering creating new courts.
At present, 8,418 court cases are pending in the family courts of Nagpur. The Department concerned estimated a cost for the establishment of these additional courts. As an initial step, the Cabinet has given approval for the amount Rs 5,60,54000.
About 5 months ago with an initiative of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra Government had finalised the proposal of a new 10-storey building of Family Court in Nagpur. The plan for the new building of Family Court was prepared during the tenure of Devendra Fadnavis as Chief Minister. The progress of the plan came to a standstill during Maha Vikas Aaghadi Government.
At present the Family Court is functioning temporarily from the Suyog building in Civil Lines. This new building will house 8 court halls. Whether the five courts announced today will be a part of these 8 courts or those will function separately, is not known.
