The Department of General Surgery at the 1020-bedded Shalinitai Meghe Hospital & Research Centre (SMHRC) achieved a groundbreaking milestone by performing its first-ever combined minimally invasive surgery on a 29-year-old male patient. This advanced procedure, conducted free of cost, underscores the hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality healthcare to underserved communities.
The patient, a resident of Katol, was identified during SMHRC’s Mahaarogya Camp, a transformative initiative designed to provide free treatment to rural populations in Vidarbha. With complaints of inguinal and scrotal swelling for four days and a history of trauma four years ago, he was diagnosed with Right Undescended Testis and Right Congenital Hernia after thorough evaluation.
Integrated Care for Faster Recovery
Under the leadership of Dr. Rajiv Sonarkar, Head of the Department of Surgery, the surgical team executed two procedures in a single session: a Right Laparoscopic Orchidectomy and a Right Transabdominal Pre-Peritoneal (TAPP) Hernia Repair. This innovative approach eliminated the need for multiple surgeries, reducing recovery time and enhancing patient outcomes.
The surgical team included Dr. Tanmay and Dr. Ashwini Kumar, with anesthesia managed seamlessly by Dr. Ripon and Dr. Shivani. The Operating Theatre (OT) staff, including Sr. Vaishali and Sr. Seema contributed to the smooth execution of the procedure, while Sr. Nandini, Sr. Soniya, and Br. Manish ensured exceptional pre- and post-operative care. Administrative coordination was led by Dr. Ishangi Nimgade, Clinical Manager, and Shri Ashish Darne, Floor Manager.
A Beacon of Hope for Rural Populations
The SMHRC Mahaarogya Camps, envisioned by the Meghe Group, have become a lifeline for thousands of rural patients, offering free consultations, treatments, and surgeries. These camps embody SMHRC’s mission of reaching the underserved and delivering care to those who cannot afford to seek treatment in urban centers.
Pioneering Expertise and Technology
Speaking about the achievement, Dr. Rajiv Sonarkar emphasized the benefits of minimally invasive techniques, including smaller incisions, less pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery. He highlighted that the patient was mobilized within hours of the surgery, with zero complications.
Dr. Anup Marar, Director of DMIHER (DU) Health Campus, praised the team for their outstanding performance and reinforced the hospital’s commitment to innovative, compassionate care. “This milestone reflects our dedication to leveraging expertise, advanced technology, and teamwork to provide comprehensive care to the underprivileged,” he stated.
Leadership and Vision
Led by Dr. Vasant Gawande- Chief Medical Superintendent & Dr.Sudhir Singh- Assistant Medical Superintendent, SMHRC continues to set benchmarks in healthcare delivery. This achievement not only showcases the hospital’s ability to adopt cutting-edge surgical techniques but also its unwavering dedication to improving patient well-being.
The successful completion of this double-hit laparoscopic surgery reinforces SMHRC’s position as a leader in medical advancements and compassionate care, furthering its mission to serve as a beacon of hope for the community.
