Pench Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra, successfully conducted a Bird Survey from 21st February to 24th February 2025, with the participation of 90 volunteers from eight states. The survey has so far recorded 250 bird species, with more species being added to the list as data is sorted and analyzed, reaffirming the reserve’s rich avian biodiversity.
The survey was successfully executed under the guidance of Dr. Kishor Mankar, CCF & Field Director of Pench Tiger Reserve, with support from Sandip Bharti, ACF (West Pench), Pooja Limgaokar, ACF (East Pench), respective RFOs and the Honorary Wildlife Warden, Nagpur Mr. Ajinkya Bhatkar. The dedicated field staff, including biologists Shrikanth Dhoble and Rutuja Bhatade, and veterinary doctor Dr. Mayank Barde, played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth execution of this important initiative.
Among the significant findings, volunteers documented sightings of rare and migratory species, including various species of vultures and warblers, reaffirming the presence of the Brown Boobook Owl, Bonelli’s Eagle, and the Ferruginous Duck. These sightings highlight the ecological importance of Pench Tiger Reserve as a critical habitat for both resident and migratory birds. Volunteers also identified key bird hotspots within the reserve, contributing valuable data for future conservation efforts.
The survey concluded with a formal closing ceremony on 24th February 2025, where certificates were distributed by RFO Vivek Rajurkar, RFO Jayesh Tayde, and CIBA founder Mr. Nitin Marathe. This acknowledgment highlighted the participants’ contributions to documenting the diversity and distribution of birds in Pench Tiger Reserve, further strengthening ongoing conservation initiatives and fostering community involvement in wildlife protection.
