The Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary has become a major attraction for wildlife enthusiasts after the well-known F-2 tigress was recently spotted roaming with her four cubs, delighting tourists on safari.
The tigress had remained hidden for several weeks after giving birth, dedicating her time to nurturing the newborn cubs. With the cubs now strong enough to accompany their mother, the family has started making regular appearances in the sanctuary’s buffer zone, giving visitors an opportunity to witness one of nature’s most fascinating sights.
The young cubs, full of energy and curiosity, have emerged as the highlight of the safari experience. Their playful behaviour has attracted large numbers of tourists and wildlife photographers hoping to capture memorable moments of the tiger family.
Although the annual monsoon closure has suspended safari operations in most forests across Maharashtra from July 1, the buffer zone at Umred-Karhandla continues to remain open depending on weather conditions. Safari rides are halted only when heavy rainfall makes operations unsafe.
The F-2 tigress has a successful history of raising cubs. Her previous litter of five has now reached adulthood and dispersed into different forest areas to establish independent territories.
Covering nearly 189 square kilometres, the Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary is accessed through three gates—Karhandla, Gothangaon and Paoni. The frequent sightings of the F-2 tigress and her four cubs have further enhanced the sanctuary’s reputation as one of Maharashtra’s top destinations for tiger sightings, even during the monsoon season.
