A 78-year-old man from Wardha was allegedly cheated of Rs 18.5 lakh by a woman tax consultant in Nagpur, who forged documents related to income tax returns over a period of two years.
The victim, Mahadev Bhaurao Dandekar, had approached the accused, Mayuri Anil Madarkar alias Mayuri Ganpat Chithde (34), who runs a tax consultancy office from her residence in Somalwada, Zenda Chowk, Nagpur.
Between April 1, 2022 and June 30, 2024, the accused misled Dandekar by claiming that he owed Rs 58.20 lakh in taxes and offered to reduce the amount. She took three signed cheques from him and later produced fake documents claiming the taxes were paid.
When Dandekar grew suspicious, he verified the matter with another Chartered Accountant and discovered that the accused had withdrawn Rs 28.16 lakh from his bank account using the cheques. While she returned a portion of the amount, she failed to repay the remaining Rs 18.50 lakh.
Based on the complaint, Sonegaon Police registered a case under IPC Sections 406, 420, 468, 471, and 504. Further investigation is ongoing.
