Dr. Ambedkar College, which has played a pivotal role in opening the doors of education to marginalized communities and transforming lives over the past 60 years, celebrated its Diamond Jubilee with great fervor. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Chief Justice of India Dhananjay Bhushan Gavai graced the occasion as chief guests, emphasizing the college’s role in social transformation and the legacy of Bharat Ratna Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.
Speaking at the event organized by the Deekshabhoomi Smarak Samiti, CM Fadnavis said that Dr. Ambedkar College has successfully carried forward the dual mission of ensuring equal educational opportunities and fulfilling Babasaheb Ambedkar’s vision of social justice. He recalled how the institution began with just five classrooms, five teachers, and 300 students, and has now grown to 6,000 students, 50 classrooms, and 40 faculty members, earning a reputation for academic excellence. He expressed hope that the college would continue to serve as a medium of social transformation.
Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai urged students to embrace the principles of Dr. Ambedkar and pursue their goals while uplifting the underprivileged sections of society. He reminisced about the invaluable contributions of leaders like Padma Shri Dadasaheb Gaikwad, former Governor Dadasaheb Gavai, and Sadanand Fulzele in building the institution. Justice Gavai also highlighted Nagpur’s tradition of communal harmony, recalling the city’s heartfelt welcome of Dr. Ambedkar’s ashes during the Silver Jubilee of the Dhamma Deeksha in 1981. He concluded his address by reciting the iconic “Bhim Vandana” penned by poet Suresh Bhat.
Earlier in the ceremony, CM Fadnavis and Bhante Arya Nagarjun Surai Sasai felicitated Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai. Five students who excelled in various fields were also honored. Principal Dr. Deepa Panekar delivered the welcome address, and Prof. Dr. Vidya Chorpagar conducted the proceedings.
