Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), bringing an end to a remarkable chapter in his cricketing journey. The 37-year-old cricketer made the announcement through his social media handle on Wednesday, August 27.
Calling it a “special day,” Ashwin expressed gratitude to the BCCI, the IPL, and the multiple franchises he represented during his 15-season career. “They say every ending has a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game in various leagues begins now,” Ashwin said. “I would like to thank all the franchises for the wonderful memories and relationships over the years, and most importantly, the IPL and BCCI for what they have given me. I look forward to what lies ahead,” he added.
Ashwin retires after playing 221 IPL matches, where he claimed 187 wickets, making him the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament’s history, behind Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sunil Narine, and Piyush Chawla. He also contributed with the bat, scoring 833 runs, including a half-century for Rajasthan Royals.
Throughout his IPL career, the off-spinner represented Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings (where he also captained the side), Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, leaving a significant impact on every franchise he played for.
