With barely nine months remaining before the revised March 2027 completion deadline, the ambitious redevelopment of Nagpur Railway Station has entered a crucial phase, raising questions about whether one of Central India’s largest railway infrastructure projects can be completed on time.
A visit to the project site reveals a mixed picture. While the new station buildings on the Santra Market (west) side are nearing completion, work on the equally important eastern station complex is still at a preliminary stage. So far, only ground levelling has been completed at the site, while construction of the signature elevated concourse linking both sides of the station has only recently begun.
Despite the visible gap in progress, railway officials remain confident about meeting the deadline. “The parking area, Platform No. 2 works and both station buildings are nearing completion. The remaining works are progressing as planned, and the project will be completed within the stipulated timeline,” an official associated with the project said.
However, the disparity between the completed sections and the amount of work still pending has raised concerns. Building an entirely new station complex on the eastern side, completing the elevated concourse and finishing extensive civil, electrical and interior works within the next nine months will require a significant acceleration in construction activity.
The redevelopment project, being executed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), was launched after Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in December 2022. Originally scheduled for completion within 36 months, the deadline was later extended to March 2027 to minimise disruption at the busy railway junction while construction continued alongside regular train operations.
Estimated to cost around Rs 488 crore, the project aims to transform the century-old station into a world-class transport hub while preserving its heritage façade.
Once completed, the station will feature separate arrival and departure terminals on both the east and west sides, connected by a spacious elevated concourse. The upgraded facility will include three new foot overbridges, 28 lifts, 31 escalators, modern waiting lounges, food courts, retail outlets, expanded parking facilities and dedicated passenger circulation areas. It will also offer improved accessibility for persons with disabilities and seamless integration with Metro services, city buses and other modes of public transport.
The heritage station building will be restored as part of the project, while the entire complex will incorporate sustainable features such as green building standards, rainwater harvesting and solar power systems.
For Nagpur, which has long awaited a modern railway gateway, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether the redevelopment meets its revised deadline or joins the growing list of major infrastructure projects delayed beyond schedule.
