A 78-year-old man with severe aortic stenosis has successfully undergone a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) using an advanced next-generation valve at Dr KG Deshpande memorial centre, home to India’s first hybrid lab and the first across SAARC nations.
The patient, who experienced repeated episodes of fainting and shortness of breath, was diagnosed with aortic stenosis after neurological conditions were ruled out. Due to his anomalous coronary arteries, he was considered high risk for open-heart surgery but well-suited for TAVI.
During the procedure, doctors also identified coronary artery disease, which was treated with stents in the same sitting, allowing for complete therapy in one go.
The advanced TAVI valve implanted offers:
· 99.7% freedom from valve deterioration at 7 years
· 40% greater durability compared to standard tissue valves
· Anti-calcification treatment for longer valve life
The procedure was led by Dr. Swapnil Deshpande and his heart team at Dr KG Deshpande memorial centre, who emphasized the importance of a hybrid lab in ensuring patient safety with full surgical backup.
TAVI therapy, with advanced valve technology, is transforming care for patients with aortic stenosis by offering a safer, minimally invasive, and durable alternative to open-heart surgery.
