Shalinitai Meghe Hospital & Research Centre (SMHRC), the 1020-bedded multi-super-speciality hospital attached to Datta Meghe Medical College at Wanadongri, Nagpur, has further strengthened its patient-centric and holistic healthcare mission by introducing Music Therapy in its Geriatric, Palliative Care and De-addiction divisions.
Under the banner “Manas – Singing Club,” this new program offers emotional, psychological and spiritual support to patients through music. Spearheaded by the Department of Psychiatry, the initiative was inaugurated by Dr. Anup Marar, Director, DMIHER (DU) Off Campus, in the presence of senior faculty and healthcare professionals, including Dr. Abhijit Faye, Dr. Priyanka Bodhare, Dr. Pritam Chandak, Dr. Apurva Joshi, Dr. Ateeba Ahmed, Dr. Surabhi Borkar, Dr. Seema Singh, Dr.Soniya Khatri, Br. Neeraj Kalihari and Sr. Vishakha. The proceedings were coordinated by Mr. Yeshwant Waghmare, Nursing In-charge, who leads the nursing and paramedical team delivering compassionate care to Geriartric patients .
Dr. P. Patil, Professor & Head, Psychiatry, highlighted that music therapy is a proven, evidence-based intervention that improves quality of life by reducing anxiety, depression and chronic pain while stimulating cognition and memory—particularly valuable in geriatric and palliative care settings.
Adding to this, Dr. Abhijit Faye explained that in palliative care, music therapy offers a non-invasive avenue for emotional expression and strengthens communication between patients, their families and caregivers.
Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Vasant Gawande emphasized that integrating music therapy reflects SMHRC’s commitment to holistic care and innovative, evidence-based approaches, ensuring patients receive not just medical treatment but also dignity, comfort and renewed joy.
