The 1020 bedded Shalinitai Meghe Hospital and Research Centre (SMHRC), Wanadongri, Nagpur, renowned for its commitment to providing comprehensive and compassionate healthcare, continues to make remarkable strides in restoring hope and vision through its skilled full time hierarchy of specialists, coordinated teamwork and advanced surgical interventions. A recent achievement by the Department of Ophthalmology stands as a shining example to the hospital’s expertise, teamwork and patient-centric approach.
Recently one 45-year-old woman, from Hingna, presented to the Ophthalmology OPD with complete blindness in her left eye. She had a history of accidental stone injury sustained two days earlier while lighting chulha (traditional stove). Upon examination, she was found to have a corneal tear with a post-traumatic complicated cataract, a severe condition that often leads to permanent vision loss if not treated promptly and meticulously.
Recognizing the urgency and severity of the case, the Ophthalmology team swiftly performed all necessary preoperative evaluations and prepared the patient for surgery. She was immediately taken to the operation theatre, where Dr. Shruti Sanghavi (Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgeon), under the guidance of Dr. Prachi Nagrale, Head of Department, and Dr. Chetan Saoji, Unit Incharge, successfully performed corneal tear repair combined with small incision cataract surgery. The intricate procedure, lasting around 1.5 hours, required exceptional precision and coordination to restore the integrity and function of the damaged eye. The procedure was well supported by an efficient nursing and paramedical team led by Sr. Vaishali Bhise (OT Incharge), Ms. Divya Shejule( OT Manager) and Sr. Amruta Ingale (Ward Incharge), who ensured seamless preoperative and postoperative care for the patient’s recovery. Dr. Ishangi Nimgade (IPD Manager) and Shri Ashish Darne (Floor Manager) extended administrative support, ensuring smooth coordination throughout the process.
Dr.Vasant Gawande- Medical Superintendent- SMHRC added that postoperatively, the patient’s recovery has been remarkable. This patient is now able to identify faces and has regained functional vision, which is considered exceptional in such complex traumatic cases. This outcome not only highlights the surgical skill of the ophthalmology team but also the efficiency of the hospital’s coordinated care system that ensures timely intervention and follow-up.
Dr. Anup Marar, Director, DMIHER (Off Campus), lauded the team’s achievement, stating that, “This case exemplifies the power of timely diagnosis, skilled intervention, and compassionate teamwork. Restoring sight is among the most rewarding outcomes, and this case reaffirms our mission to deliver world-class care to the people of Central India.”
This inspiring recovery redefines hope and underscores SMHRC’s vision of making accessible world-class healthcare to every patient it serves through medical excellence, dedication, and human touch.
