Many taxpayers are sharing the same concern on social media — even months after filing their Income Tax Returns (ITRs), refunds have not been credited yet.
While the wait can be frustrating, such delays are not unusual this year. The Income Tax Department has increased scrutiny of returns, which has slowed processing but also made the reasons for delays more transparent.
Why are income tax refunds delayed this year?
Refunds are often delayed if an ITR is not fully processed or if errors or non-compliance are detected. One of the most common reasons is failure to verify the return after filing. Merely submitting the ITR is not enough — it must be verified via Aadhaar OTP, net banking, EVC, or by sending a signed ITR-V to CPC, Bengaluru. An unverified return is considered invalid, and no refund is issued.
This year, the department is also strictly matching income details with Form 26AS, the Annual Information Statement (AIS), and the Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS). Any mismatch, whether accidental or otherwise, can delay the refund. Pending tax demands, notices issued under Section 143(1), or incorrect bank account details can also contribute to the delay.
What should taxpayers do now?
First, don’t panic. A delayed refund does not necessarily indicate a major issue. Log in to the income tax e-filing portal and check the “Pending Actions” section for any notices. Download the intimation and carefully compare it with your filed return, Form 26AS, and AIS.
If the department’s observations are correct, accept them. If not, respond promptly with proper supporting documents. Regularly checking messages and alerts from the tax department is crucial.
How to track your income tax refund
You can check your refund status online by following these steps:
- Visit the Income Tax India e-filing website
- Log in using your PAN, password, and captcha
- Go to ‘View Returns/Forms’
- Select ‘Income Tax Returns’ from the drop-down menu
- Enter the assessment year and submit
- Click on the relevant ITR acknowledgement number to view the refund status
Staying vigilant, responding on time, and ensuring your details match official records can help speed up the process and ensure your refund reaches you sooner.
