Sunetra Pawar, wife of the late Ajit Pawar, was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Saturday, becoming the first woman to hold the post in the state.
The 62-year-old leader took the oath of office at Lok Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and several senior leaders. Governor Acharya Devvrat administered the oath.
Ahead of the ceremony, Sunetra Pawar resigned from her Rajya Sabha membership to assume the new role.
Following the death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash in Baramati on January 28, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), a constituent of the ruling Mahayuti alliance, elected Sunetra Pawar as the leader of its legislature wing. The party conveyed its decision to Chief Minister Fadnavis, who forwarded the recommendation to the Governor.
Sunetra Pawar is widely known for her contributions to sustainable development, environmental conservation, and rural empowerment. During her tenure as a Rajya Sabha MP, she actively championed initiatives aimed at inclusive and sustainable growth.
In 2010, she founded the Environmental Forum of India (EFOI), a non-governmental organisation focused on spreading environmental awareness and promoting eco-friendly practices. She has spearheaded grassroots campaigns on biodiversity conservation, protection of endangered species, water management, and drought mitigation.
Ajit Pawar died when the chartered aircraft carrying him crash-landed in Baramati. The accident also claimed the lives of his personal security officer, a flight attendant, and two pilots.
