Meta Platforms has announced that it will shut down the standalone Facebook Messenger website (messenger.com) in April 2026. Users trying to access the web platform will automatically be redirected to Facebook’s integrated messaging page at facebook.com/messages.
The move is part of Meta’s broader strategy to streamline its messaging services and consolidate its platforms.
Messenger App on Android and iOS to Remain Unchanged
Despite the shutdown of the web version, the Facebook Messenger mobile app will continue to function normally on both Android and iOS devices. Users can keep chatting without interruption on smartphones and tablets.
Meta has confirmed that chat histories will remain intact. Users will also be able to restore conversations using secure backup PINs. Those who have forgotten their PIN can reset it through the app’s recovery process.
A Broader Platform Consolidation Strategy
The decision follows Meta’s earlier move in late 2025 to discontinue standalone Messenger desktop applications for Windows and Mac, which similarly redirected users to Facebook’s web interface.
This marks a shift from Meta’s earlier strategy. In 2014, the company separated Messenger from the main Facebook app to establish it as an independent messaging platform. Originally introduced as Facebook Chat in 2008 and later launched as a standalone app in 2011, Messenger once represented Meta’s push toward a dedicated cross-platform communication service.
However, since 2023, Meta has gradually reintegrated Messenger features back into the core Facebook experience, signalling a broader consolidation of its ecosystem. With messaging also integrated across platforms like Instagram Direct Messages and WhatsApp, the company appears to be aligning its communication services more cohesively.
Meta has assured users that essential messaging features—including text chats, media sharing, and group conversations—will continue seamlessly on the redirected web platform and the mobile app. The shutdown is scheduled for April 2026, giving users ample time to adapt to the new arrangement.
