In a significant advancement in women’s healthcare, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Nagpur, has successfully performed two complex gynaecological procedures using the latest Vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (vNOTES), offering completely scarless results with faster recovery.
vNOTES is an advanced form of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery performed through the natural vaginal opening, eliminating the need for any external abdominal incisions. Using a high-definition camera and specialised instruments inserted through the vagina, surgeons can operate with precision while ensuring the abdomen remains entirely scar-free. This approach typically results in reduced pain, fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and quicker return to daily activities compared to conventional open or even standard laparoscopic procedures.
At Max Hospital, Nagpur, the technique was used to treat two patients with distinct clinical needs. The newly launched vNOTES program is being led by Dr. Mugdha Jungari Gill, Principal Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Dr. Sakshi Bansal, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, along with their team.
Sharing the cases, Dr. Mugdha Jungari Gill, said, “In the first case, a 33-year-old woman presented with pain in the abdomen for one year and had a large ovarian cyst around 12 cm approximately the size of an orange. Her main concern was preserving fertility and avoiding visible abdominal scars. We successfully removed the cyst using the vNOTES approach, ensuring a scarless outcome and enabling a swift, comfortable recovery. In the second case, a 50-year-old woman suffering from heavy menstrual bleeding for more than three years was diagnosed with a bulky uterus that required a hysterectomy along with removal of both fallopian tubes and ovaries. The procedure was carried out using the vNOTES technique, again without any abdominal incision. The patient experienced a smooth post-operative recovery and was in good health at follow-up.”
Adding further on the technique, Dr. Sakshi Bansal, said, “This technique is particularly beneficial for young and unmarried patients, where avoiding visible scars is a key concern. Compared to conventional approaches, vNOTES offers better recovery, less pain, and lower complication rates. Most patients can go home within 24 hours. Additionally, this technique enhances surgical visibility, making procedures safer and more precise.”
With this initiative, the hospital aims to bring world-class, minimally invasive and scarless gynaecological care closer to women across Central India.
