Urban India is witnessing a major shift in travel habits, with many people now choosing local experiences over vacations and quick getaways.
A survey by Bengaluru-based experiences platform Alive App, conducted among 5 lakh consumers across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Goa between March and April 2026, found that nearly 75 per cent of urban respondents are preferring local leisure activities this summer instead of travelling.
Rising travel costs impact plans
The survey revealed that 67 per cent of respondents feel travel has become more expensive compared to last year due to rising airfares, higher aviation fuel costs, limited airline capacity, and peak-season demand.
Only 34 per cent had confirmed travel plans for the March-May period, while another one-third remained undecided. The rest had dropped travel plans completely.
Local experiences on the rise
Instead of long-distance travel, many are now spending more on activities closer to home. Around 39 per cent said they are participating in more local experiences than before, while 36 per cent said their habits remain unchanged.
Adventure activities, outdoor events, and cultural experiences emerged as the most preferred options. Around 35 per cent also said they are spending more money on local leisure activities.
Convenience over travel stress
The report found that convenience, lack of time, and uncertainty around flights were also major reasons behind the shift. While 22 per cent preferred local experiences for convenience, nearly 20 per cent cited time constraints and another 20 per cent pointed to flight delays and cancellations.
The findings suggest that urban Indians are not just avoiding travel due to high costs but are increasingly choosing experiences that better fit their lifestyle and schedules.
