Residents and morning walkers from Nagpur’s Hanuman Nagar area have launched a “Save Amrai” campaign to restore and protect the historic 300-year-old Bhosale-era Amrai and well located in Sonegaon.
On Saturday, around 20 youngsters and senior citizens joined hands to clean the Hanuman Temple and nearby heritage well premises, collecting nearly 10 sacks of waste including liquor bottles, beer bottles, plastic waste, cigarette packets, cake boxes, and other garbage dumped at the scenic site.
Members of the newly formed “Save Amrai” group said the area has increasingly become a hangout spot for youngsters and anti-social elements due to its secluded natural surroundings. While many visitors come for celebrations and gatherings, large amounts of waste are often left behind, harming the historic and ecological character of the place.
The volunteers carried out a full clean-up of the area and pledged to continue the drive every Sunday morning to maintain cleanliness and preserve the heritage site.
Citizens have also proposed reviving the original “Amrai” identity of the area by planting different varieties of mango trees and restoring its green cover.
Officials from the Lakshminagar Zone of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation are expected to support waste collection and disposal efforts.
Recently, Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani visited the Bhosale-era well along with civic officials and inspected the surroundings of the Hanuman Temple. Following approval from the heritage committee, restoration and cleaning work of the historic well is also expected to begin soon.
Residents further said that water from the well could later be used to maintain the surrounding greenery and newly planted mango trees.
The “Save Amrai” group has appealed to visitors and youngsters to avoid littering and carry waste disposal bags to help preserve the cleanliness and heritage value of the natural site.
