Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has demanded the shutdown of bike taxi services operated via app-based platforms and called for criminal action against the companies’ owners.
The state government has also instructed the cyber crime department to immediately block unauthorised bike taxi applications and initiate legal proceedings against aggregators allegedly operating without valid permissions, according to reports.
The crackdown has intensified, with authorities reportedly targeting ride-hailing platforms such as Ola, Uber and Rapido for alleged violations of transport regulations. In a letter to the Additional Director General of Police (Maharashtra Cyber), Sarnaik alleged that these companies were providing passenger transport services without government approval or compliance with transport department rules.
He raised concerns over public safety, particularly with the rising number of bike taxis operated through Rapido, stating that the services lack key safeguards such as proper driver verification, insurance coverage, women’s safety measures and emergency response systems.
Data from the State Transport Authority for April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026 shows enforcement teams detected 715 Rapido-linked bike taxis across Maharashtra, compared to 18 linked to Ola and 43 linked to Uber. During raids, 110 Rapido vehicles and 15 Ola vehicles were detained, while nine FIRs were registered and fines of over ₹11.85 lakh were collected.
The transport department has also argued that these unauthorised services are impacting licensed autorickshaw and taxi operators by engaging in commercial transport activities in violation of regulations. Sarnaik has sought strict action against companies, drivers, and management under the Information Technology Act and the Motor Vehicles Act. Around 14 FIRs were reportedly filed in 2026 against aggregators for similar violations.
Meanwhile, the state is considering a policy framework for electric bike taxis with green number plates, with a final decision expected after reviewing compliance requirements. The minister reiterated that Maharashtra remains committed to public safety and will not tolerate unauthorised transport operations.
