The state government’s policy of merging low-enrolment schools to develop cluster schools has been adopted across Maharashtra, with 36 such schools selected for development as model cluster schools across the state. However, Nagpur district’s only ideal school in Kuhi taluka — identified by the Zilla Parishad as the best candidate — has seen no action taken on the proposal for two years.
In smaller schools, the absence of adequate educational materials and facilities has adversely affected the quality of student learning, the School Education Department’s inspection division has noted. Under the state’s 2020 cluster school policy, schools were proposed to be developed into cluster schools to improve students’ social and academic development. Initially, unions and parents opposed the plan. Later, each taluka considered developing one cluster school, but the central School Education Department sought proposals from all states for 250 cluster schools nationwide. Maharashtra submitted proposals from 36 districts, including one from Nagpur’s Kuhi taluka — specifically the Zilla Parishad Upper Primary School, Pachkhedi.
However, two years on, no progress has been made. For students in the area, transportation arrangements between nearby schools remain unavailable. Primary Education Officer Nilesh Gunde could not be reached for comment.
