The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the establishment of a Government College of Horticulture at Katol in Nagpur district, marking a significant boost to agricultural education and research in the Vidarbha region.
The new college, affiliated with Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola, will admit 120 students annually and is expected to serve aspiring horticulture professionals from 11 districts of Vidarbha.
The institution will promote higher education, research, and innovation in fruit cultivation, vegetable production, floriculture, food processing, and value addition, helping strengthen the region’s horticulture sector and enhance farmers’ income through modern agricultural practices.
The Cabinet has also approved the creation of 51 regular posts to ensure the smooth functioning of the college.
The decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday. The proposal was presented by the Agriculture Department.
