The Maharashtra Transport Department on Monday announced that it will begin strict enforcement against vehicles operating without High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) from July 1.
According to the department, the transport authorities and police will jointly or independently take action against vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, that fail to install HSRPs by the June 30 deadline. The action will be taken under Rule 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act and Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
However, vehicle owners who have booked an authorised appointment for HSRP installation on or before June 30 will receive temporary relief from the enforcement drive starting July 1, 2026.
The department clarified that this relaxation will not apply to the renewal of vehicle fitness certificates.
The Maharashtra government had appointed three authorised companies through a tendering process last year to install High Security Registration Plates across the state.
