The United States has imposed sanctions on SBL Energy Limited, a company with a manufacturing unit in Nagpur, alleging its involvement in a network that supplied explosive materials used in Sudan’s ongoing civil war.
The company had earlier come under national attention after a devastating explosion at its Nagpur facility in March 2026, which claimed the lives of 27 workers, including 24 women.
Originally based in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, SBL Energy also operates a unit in Nagpur.
The sanctions were announced on June 26 by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) as part of action against eight individuals and entities allegedly involved in facilitating arms supplies to the warring factions in Sudan.
According to the U.S. Treasury, the sanctioned network allegedly supported both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) by supplying military-related materials. SBL Energy Limited has been identified as one of the entities allegedly linked to this network.
In its official press release, the U.S. Treasury stated that the Defense Industries System (DIS) is Sudan’s largest state-owned defense enterprise, responsible for producing, maintaining, and supplying weapons, ammunition, military vehicles, and other defense equipment for the Sudanese Armed Forces.
The statement further alleges that DIS procures military equipment from Iran and other sources and operates through several subsidiaries, including GIAD Industrial Group and Sudan Master Technology, generating billions of dollars in revenue.
The U.S. sanctions target entities and individuals alleged to have supported this procurement and supply network. As of now, SBL Energy Limited has not publicly responded to the allegations or the U.S. sanctions.
