Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has announced a new feature that will allow users to connect using unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers, enhancing privacy on the platform.
In a statement issued on Monday, the company said users will be able to reserve a unique username starting this week ahead of the feature’s global rollout later this year.
“Your phone number is personal, and sometimes you want to connect without handing it over. That’s why we’re introducing usernames for WhatsApp,” the company said.
To reserve a username, users need to update to the latest version of WhatsApp and navigate to Settings > Account > Username.
The new feature is designed to prevent phone numbers from being automatically shared in situations such as joining large group chats or messaging someone or a business for the first time. WhatsApp also clarified that there will be no searchable username directory or suggestions, meaning users will need to know a person’s exact username to initiate contact.
Meta said the feature will be rolled out in phases across countries over the coming months, with users being notified as it becomes available in their region.
The announcement comes shortly after Meta named Kunal Shah, founder of Indian fintech company CRED, as WhatsApp’s new global head. Announcing the appointment, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Shah’s experience in building one of India’s leading technology companies and his global perspective would help drive the future growth of the world’s largest messaging platform.
