Marking World Drowning Prevention Day, the JD Sports Foundation (JDSF) and the National Institute of Swimming (NIS) have launched ‘Drowning Prevention Week’ at the NIS swimming pool on Manewada-Besa Road.
Observed annually on July 25, World Drowning Prevention Day aims to raise awareness about preventing drowning-related deaths. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 3,60,000 people lose their lives to drowning every year worldwide. The global observance seeks to promote water safety and encourage preventive measures. JDSF and NIS have been organising awareness programmes to mark the occasion since 2021.
The week-long campaign, being held from July 19 to 25, was inaugurated by international swimmer and Shiv Chhatrapati Award recipient Jayant Duble, who highlighted WHO’s guidelines on drowning prevention and outlined the activities planned for the week. The programme was compered by Prof Shyam Phalke.
A series of awareness and training programmes have been scheduled throughout the week, including a drowning prevention awareness campaign, a water safety knowledge test for school and college students, a seminar on methods of rescuing a drowning person, a webinar on the role of voluntary organisations in drowning prevention, a CPR and artificial respiration training workshop, a lifesaving skills demonstration, and a water safety quiz competition. The programme will conclude with a valedictory function on July 25.
Dr Jayprakash Duble, International Swimming Coach and President of JDSF, has appealed to students, youth and citizens to participate actively in the various competitions, workshops and awareness programmes organised during the week.
