National Medical Commission issues notification for Annual MBBS Admission Regulations 2020

With an aim to establish medical colleges in every district, and to provide affordable and accessible MBBS education, the National Medical Commission has issued notification of the Minimum Requirements for Annual MBBS Admission Regulations 2020 for all medical colleges across the country.

This notification will replace the “Minimum Standard Requirements 1999 (50/100/150/200/250 for Annual Admission)”.
According to the notification, there is a plan to develop multispecialty hospitals in various districts which have 250 to 300 beds, as district hospitals, and start MBBS colleges there. The 250 bed hospitals in hilly areas and northeastern states will be accredited to run MBBS courses.

Until now, it was not decided how old the hospital should be of 250 to 300 beds. The NMC, explaining this for the first time, has mandated a hospital with above-bed capacity for at least two years. The new regulation also rationalizes the human resources of teaching faculty. Provision has been made for visiting faculty’ to enhance the quality of training.

The notification also mentions that it is necessary to have a hostel with the hospital, but the imperative to be on a large plot has been removed. Also, a hospital or college running medical course will be able to get recognition on two plots. In this, it has been clarified that if the distance between the hospital and hostel is five Km or it takes a maximum of 30 minutes to travel, whichever is less will be valid.
It is mandatory for the medical colleges to have a laboratory capacity of 60 students and have all lab facilities for students. It is necessary to have e-learning facilities. The space required for the library and number of books and periodicals has been reduced rationally considering the increasing study pressure on medical students also student counselling services is mandatory.

Apart from this, the medical colleges will have to update their website in the first week of every month. In this, information of college officials and other activities will be updated so that details of the college infrastructure could be obtained online. The complete information about colleges will be assessed at the time of national ranking.
