After it found that the ward numbers 1 to 4 and 7 and 8 were unsafe for the patients these wards were closed in Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital aka Mayo hospital. The 600-bed surgical complex was converted into Covid hospital. Therefore; only 300 beds are remaining for the non-covid patients. The situation became worse when the number of non-Covid patients increased in the city as it had created problem to provide them beds.
Earlier a proposal was sent to the Government for a 500-bed medicine block but this proposal is yet to get approval. This British Era hospital which is spread over 38.26 acres, patients were still being served from this old building. In view of the danger of the building, last year the Public Works Department conducted a ‘structural audit’ of the hospital building. The report stated that all together six wards situated in British era building were unsafe. And the concerned wards were shifted to other building and after that the crisis of pandemic started.Mayo has proposed a medicine block building due to insufficient space.
