Cyclon Tauktae: IMD warns heavy rainfall in Mumbai

As Cyclon Tauktae lay about 145 km west of Mumbai and 180 km south-southeast of Diu Indian Meteorological Department has upgraded the warning to extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai for the next few hours. Gusty wind will continue and escalate up to 120kmph

Taking note on the cyclone Mumbai Airport operations was closed from 11 am 4 pm. Several parts of Mumbai and neighbouring areas are witnessing heavy downpour coupled with strong winds as IMD has upgraded the warning to extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai for next few hours.

The Bandra-Worli sea-link was closed for traffic in view of the strong winds and people were asked to take alternate routes, another senior official of the BMC said. The Colaba area in south Mumbai recorded a wind speed of 102 km per hour around 11 am, the highest for the day so far.

Heavy rain has caused water logged in many areas in Mumbai. Heavy rain and winds also caused damaged to Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) COVID care centre. Citing the cyclon all the vaccination centers have been closed for the day.

536 instances of structural damages (house collapse, roof collapse, pole uprooting) reported in Sindhudurg, 61 in Ratnagiri and 2 each in Raigad and Thane districts till last night, due to cyclone Taukate

While one person was killed and two injured were in Raigad due to CycloneTaukate while 8,383 people have been shifted to a safer place informed Office of District Collector, Raigad

Where as one person died, two rescued, 6 others missing from a TUG vessel that was assisting a ship at MRPL’s Single Point Mooring near Mangaluru.

Tauktae Cyclone is very likely to move north-northwestwards & reach Gujarat coast today evening & cross between Porbandar & Mahuva (Bhavnagar district) during 2000-2300 hrs as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm with a maximum sustained wind speed 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph informed IMD.
