Sonam Wangchuk’s fast-unto-death at Jantar Mantar, now in its fourth week, has drawn moral support from a wide group of Ambedkarite writers, thinkers and social activists, who have urged the Centre to open immediate dialogue with the protesters. The statement comes days after Wangchuk was forcibly hospitalised, intensifying the agitation.
Wangchuk began his fast on June 28 under the leadership of Abhijit Deepke, demanding a fair probe into alleged irregularities in the NEET-2026 examination, the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, greater transparency in the education system, and safeguards for students’ futures. Organisers say the protest has grown beyond a single exam to raise questions of institutional accountability in education.
In their statement, the signatories invoked the constitutional right to peaceful protest, saying the government’s response should be dialogue, not confrontation. They called on authorities to take Wangchuk’s health seriously, respond promptly to the protesters’ demands, and act with sensitivity given the stakes for students nationwide.
