India surpasses Australia to take the top spot in the ICC rankings

India surpasses Australia to take the top spot in the ICC rankings

On January 17, 2023, Team India, led by Rohit Sharma, once again held the top spot in the ICC Men’s Test Rankings, which is a significant accomplishment for the team. While Australia was previously ranked as the top Test team, the most recent update places the Men in Blue ahead of the Kangaroos because they have more rating points.

When Australia tours India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy beginning next month, the top-two Test teams in the world will face off in a four-match Test series.

After 32 Test matches, India has 3,690 points and a rating of 115, while Australia has 3,231 points and a rating of 111. With 106 rating points, England is currently ranked third in the world in the longest format, while New Zealand, winners of the first World Test Championship, is ranked fourth with 100 rating points. With an assessment of 85, South Africa rounds out the top 5.

How did India surpass Australia?

It is important to note that while series victories over Bangladesh and Sri Lanka helped India increase their rating points, Australia also enjoyed a successful run in the game’s traditional format with victories over the West Indies and South Africa.

The Australian team’s most recent Test match against South Africa, which was marred by rain, ended in a draw, in contrast to the Indian team’s two victories over Bangladesh. Their rankings appear to have suffered as a result, and they were denied the title of top team in the world.

However, Pat Cummins and Co. would be aware that they not only have a chance to atone for their actions by defeating India in India and reclaiming the top spot on the rankings table, but they can also prevent India from competing in their second straight World Test Championship final by doing so.
