Wankhede Stadium will soon have a small victory memorial in the stands where former India captain MS Dhoni’s iconic winning six landed during India’s World Cup victory in 2011.
The Apex Council Members of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) decided to dedicate a memorial to Dhoni at the MCA Pavillion to commemorate his 2011 World Cup six.
“Today, the MCA Apex Council decided to build a small victory memorial in the Wankhede Standium stands to commemorate India’s 2011 World Cup victory,” MCA president Amol Kale said.He also said that MCA will approach MS Dhoni, India’s then-skipper in 2011 triumph for the inauguration of the memorial.
MCA hopes that Dhoni will dedicate the memorial while in Mumbai for the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Mumbai Indians on April 8. The date has not yet been set because it is entirely dependent on MS Dhoni’s consent and availability.

“The MCA will also honour MS Dhoni when he inaugurates the World Cup Victory Memorial in Wankhede Stadium,” Kale concluded.
Dhoni recently recalled a highly emotional moment for the climactic match against Sri Lanka on the 12th anniversary of his title triumph on Sunday.
“The best feeling lasted about 15-20 minutes” (before the winning moment). We didn’t need many runs because the partnership was well-placed and there was plenty of dew. The stadium then began to sing Vande Mataram. “That atmosphere, I feel, is very difficult to recreate. Perhaps in this (upcoming 2023) World Cup, there is a similar scenario, once the stadium, the fans start contributing,” Dhoni was quoted by the ICC as saying.
“It’s a very difficult atmosphere to recreate.” But it can only be replicated if the occasion is similar to that of 2011 and there are 40, 50, or 60,000 people singing. “To me, it was 15-20 minutes ago when emotionally I was very high. At the same time, I was eager to finish it. We knew we were going to win from here, and it was extremely difficult for us to lose. So, you know, it was more of a sense of accomplishment, job done, let’s move on from here,” he added.
In the final, India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Sri Lanka scored 274/6 in 50 overs after batting first. Lanka reached a competitive total thanks to an unbeaten century from Mahela Jayawardene (103*) and knocks from skipper Kumar Sangakkara (22*). Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan each took two wickets, while Harbhajan Singh took one.
India lost Sehwag (0) and Tendulkar (18) early in their chase for 275. However, an early 83-run partnership between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli (35) boosted India’s chances. Gambhir went on to score 97 in 122 balls and shared a 109-run fourth-wicket stand with skipper MS Dhoni, who finished with an unbeatable 91* off 79 balls. Dhoni and Yuvraj (21*) shared an unbeaten 54-run fifth-wicket stand to lead Team India to its first World Cup title in 28 years.
