The Supreme Court overruled the decision of the Bombay High Court and validated the caste certificate of Navneet Rana, an independent MP from Amravati elected in 2019. Rana is now a BJP candidate seeking election for the second term.
Navneet Rana’s caste certificate was challenged and the High Court on June 8, 2021, decided against her claim of submitting a genuine caste certificate with her nomination form in 2019. She challenged the decision in the Supreme Court, which decided in her favour on Thursday. The verdict has come before the submission of nomination papers for the Amravati constituency, which is a major relief for the forceful candidate.
Navneet Rana would face challenge from former Shiv Sena MP Anandrao Adsul and and Prahar Janshakti Party candidate fielded by Bachchu Kadu.
Rana is filing her nomination paper on Thursday, the last date for filing the nominations. Polling will be held on April 26.
