A successful Interventional Procedure of placing tracheal stent was performed at KRIMS Hospitals which saved patient’s life by resolving complex Airway Fistula.
A 69-year-old patient from Madhyapradesh presented with a medical history of moderate COPD, post-infective sequelae, pleural effusion. He was also suffering from rare form of cancer in the oesophagus(food pipe) for which esophageal stent was already placed. The patient had large cancerous growth in esophagus compressing his air passage.
A bronchoscopy procedure was performed on him, revealing a fistula or hole in the airway system. This tracheal defect was identified as the cause of the patient’s cough, posing potential challenges and risks if left untreated.
The Senior interventional pulmonologist Dr. Ashok Arbat and his team Dr. Parimal Deshpande with Dr. Swapnil Bakamwar at KRIMS determined that stenting with bronchial wash was the optimal course of action. Utilizing advanced technology and precise techniques, the fistula was successfully covered with a stent during the procedure. This intervention led to a significant improvement in the patient’s cough and overall well being. Now Patient has two stents, the first one is in oesophagus and second one in trachea.
Following the successful stent placement, the patient was discharged on the same day with noticeable improvement in breathing functionality. This procedure, with a success rate exceeding 80-90%, is considered to be safe and effective in resolving airway fistulas in patients with complex respiratory conditions such as COPD and pleural effusion.
KRIMS is on mission to ‘Bring Breath Back’ since its existence. With the track record of successfully performing interventional procedures on number of patients using bronchial stenting, KRIMS have solidified their expertise through substantial results, said Dr. Arbat.
