Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons and a prominent figure in India’s business landscape, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86. The esteemed industrialist, who had been in critical condition, took his last breath in a Mumbai hospital.
In a heartfelt statement, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran described Tata as his “friend, mentor, and guide,” confirming the sad news.
“We are deeply saddened to bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, an extraordinary leader whose vast contributions have not only shaped the Tata Group but also left an indelible mark on the nation,” said Chandrasekaran.
Tata, who was known for his modest lifestyle despite an estimated net worth of Rs 3,600 crore, had led the conglomerate through decades of expansion, making it one of the most diversified companies in the country. His enduring commitment to charitable causes through the Tata Trusts has further cemented his legacy.
Succession Speculation at Tata Group
Ratan Tata’s succession has become a topic of growing interest. As he has no children, speculation is rife about who will take the helm of the Rs 3,800 crore Tata empire. N Chandrasekaran has already taken over as chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company, in 2017, but questions about future leadership persist. Several members of the Tata family hold leadership roles in different parts of the business, and the company’s succession plans are already in motion.
Noel Tata: The Leading Contender
Noel Tata, Ratan Tata’s half-brother, is seen as a leading candidate to carry forward the Tata legacy. The son of Naval Tata from his second marriage to Simone Tata, Noel has long been involved in the family business and holds a prominent position within the group. His deep family ties and experience make him a strong contender for leadership.
The Next Generation: Maya, Neville, and Leah Tata
Noel Tata’s three children are also in the spotlight as potential heirs to the Tata group’s vast empire.
Maya Tata (34) has emerged as a rising star within the Tata Group. Educated at Bayes Business School and the University of Warwick, she has played key roles in Tata Opportunities Fund and Tata Digital. She was instrumental in the launch of the Tata Neu App, showcasing her vision and strategic leadership.
Neville Tata (32), Noel’s son, is heavily involved in the family’s retail business. As the head of Star Bazaar, a leading hypermarket chain under Trent Limited, Neville has proven his business acumen. He is also married to Manasi Kirloskar of the Toyota Kirloskar Group, further connecting two influential business families.
Leah Tata (39), the eldest of Noel’s children, brings her expertise to the hospitality division of Tata Group. With a degree from Spain’s IE Business School, she has contributed significantly to Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces and oversees operations at the Indian Hotel Company, bolstering the group’s presence in the hospitality industry.
The Road Ahead
After Tata’s demise, the question of leadership succession remains at the forefront. Noel Tata and his children are positioned as key players in shaping the future of one of India’s most prestigious groups. Their leadership will not only maintain the company’s legacy but also influence its continued innovation and impact on society.
