A three-day special session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is set to take place in Mumbai from December 7 to 9, allowing newly-elected MLAs to take oath and elect a Speaker. The winter session of the State Legislature will follow in Nagpur from December 16 to 21, sources revealed on Wednesday.
According to sources, the newly-elected MLAs will be sworn in over two days, December 7 and 8. The election for the Speaker of the newly-constituted 15th Assembly is scheduled for December 9, which will also include a trust vote for the new Mahayuti (Grand Alliance) government.
At 4 p.m. on December 9, Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan will address a joint session of both Houses of the Legislature. The agenda will then include a condolence motion to honor departed members and the tabling of the Governor’s address for discussion. The debate on the Governor’s speech will be held during the winter session in Nagpur.
The agenda for the special session will be presented to the state cabinet on Thursday, December 5, after the newly-appointed Chief Minister takes the oath of office—13 days after the Assembly election results were declared. Following cabinet approval, the proposal will be sent to the Governor for final consent.
The ruling Mahayuti coalition, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, commands an overwhelming majority with 230 seats in the 288-member Assembly, ensuring a smooth passage of its legislative agenda.
